Begun in 1960, the Goodwill Auxiliary
is a volunteer organization of 70 women and
men dedicated to supporting the Goodwill mission through various
fund-raising efforts. Their main focus is The Collector’s
Corner (established in 1971), a small boutique located inside the
Santa Cruz Goodwill Store. Other fund-raising efforts include an
annual fashion show, treasure sale and a silver sale.
In addition to staffing The Collector’s Corner, Auxiliary
members gather weekly in their workroom to sort through antiques
and collectibles. There they wash and polish, repair and re-string,
price and pack, and research the history of particular items and
still have a little time left for coffee and doughnuts. In addition
to the work the members do, they also host some great parties during
the year. In 2005 The Goodwill Auxiliary raised over $126,000 to
assist Goodwill Industries in providing skills training and education
for people with barriers to employment. As a group they contributed
more than 7,000 volunteer hours.
The Goodwill Auxiliary is always looking for new volunteers. People
with a love of antiques, collectibles and dolls will find volunteering
with the Auxiliary particularly exciting. For information on becoming
a Goodwill volunteer call (831) 423-8611, ext. 235.
