Goodwill Breaks Ground at New Salinas Site
Goodwill Industries
of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties broke gorund
on Oct. 13th, 2011 their newly purchased
property at 1325 N. Main St., Salinas. In attendance were Goodwill
board members, staff, city officials and the Salinas Chamber
of Commerce.
The new property will house a Workforce Development Center, Store
and a Donation/Processing Center. Goodwill purchased the property
in October of 2010 as part of the Goodwill board’s strategic
plan and part of continuing efforts to expand its services. It
is conveniently located on a major throughway between downtown
and the Salinas Mall.
Senior Vice President of Workforce Development Services, John Collins
announced, “ We are happy to expand our services in the Salinas
community as well as offer a newer larger Goodwill store and donation
center.”
The site will allow for more efficiency as it combines the workforce
development services center with store and donations/processing
site, modeled after Goodwill’s latest acquisition in Capitola.
Goodwill served over 10,000 people last year, 17% of them in Monterey
county. According to Employment Services Manager, Wil Moore, “The
new career center will more than double our present capacity in
Salinas to provide job seeking services and internet service points
to the community. The center will have room to co-locate partner
staff, further providing local residents with the immediate and
necessary resources to return to work. It will truly be a community
based career center where residents can easily access the help
they need.”
The current Sherwood Gardens Goodwill store will be permanently
relocated to the new site. It’s estimated that over fifteen
employees will be employed at the new store/donation center, as
well as seven staff members in the employment services division.
The Goodwill store will provide a better shopping experience featuring
larger selection of merchandise, better lighting throughout the
store, shopping carts and easier access for donating. The opening
date is tentatively slated for Spring 2012.
